What Is VoIP And How Does It Work?

What is VoIP ? It has been around us for a very long time but most of the people don’t know the name of the service that they are using. It is like the unknown superhero in our lives and it lets people communicate with each other with high quality and less spending.

What Is The Meaning Of VoIP ?

Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP), is basically a technology that carries our voice to long distance communication. Let’s give some real, tangible examples for it. Assume that you are living in Turkey and you have to call your friend in Germany. You call the number and the call goes to your local operator, your local operator sends this signal to a vendor or ISP in Germany and after all these processes, you get connected with your friend and start talking to each other. As you understand, all those transmissions are made by the VoIP technology. As an end user, you never know that you are using VoIP; but behind the curtains, these companies like Sigma Telecom, do all those things to make people stay connected.

How Does VoIP Work?

When you talk on the phone, your voice is being turned into digital codecs and those codecs are forwarded to the country that you are talking to, via the internet. All these processes happen really fast, only within seconds. We are living in the Digital Era and of course, nobody wants to wait for talking on the phone. With VoIP, you certainly don’t!

How Does VoIP Carry The Voice Over The Internet?

For changing the signals from analog to digital, sure there are some instruments that VoIP is using. You may be familiar with some of them. Let’s check:

  • ATA – Analog Telephone Adaptor

ATA, in other words, analog telephone adaptor, is a device that turns the analog signals to digital. ATA is the simplest and most common way that is used in VoIP technology.

Roadmap of a call with ATA:

Ordinary Phone -> ATA -> Ethernet -> Router -> Internet -> VoIP Service Provider

  • IP Phones

IP phones are specialized telephones for VoIP and they skip the ATA device step and directly connects to ethernet. They look like as ordinary phones but the have RJ-45 ethernet connector. But nowadays all smartphones have wi-fi and there’s no need for IP phones.

  • Computer To Computer

With only a speaker, microphone, sound card, and an active internet connection, you can easily use VoIP and make calls for long distance. There are many software that enables you to make free or low-cost calls.
